Hypocrisy at the Nelson Club
Hypocrisy - the practice of claiming to have higher standards or more noble beliefs than is the case.
Facilitated by local Nelson MP Nick Smith and The Nelson Club, on the 24th of October 2019 our local Nelson Mosque Imam spoke to Club members and partners about his Muslim faith and life in New Zealand.
The intention of the luncheon was to bring different cultures and perspectives together in order to grow tolerance and understanding between people with different backgrounds within our community.
The irony, like the members, could not be denser. This event, with noble goals, was held at a men’s club. For those under the age of thirty, the Nelson club only allows male members. If I wrote this as a scene, my editor would reject it as too far fetched to be credible.
To paraphrase Shakespeare regarding Nick Smith’s recent retirement and apology for voting against same-sex marriage …
