Using images when writing

No matter what I’m writing; novels, stories, articles or essays, I like to find images of what I’m writing about. It brings the scene to life in my head, allowing me to focus on the whole picture or a minute detail. Here are some of the images I’ve been using (and some of the text they inspired) as I’ve been writing the third book in the series - Conspiracy.

1970s board of old white men

With their grey hair receding and cut short, they looked like every 1970s New Zealand board of directors, a homogenous a group of human peas in a pod.

Blue car over vehicle inspection pit

‘Whether it’s here, lying in a pool of your own blood or at work, stuffed into one of the vehicle inspection pits for your work mates to find. The SIS agent tailing you isn’t there to protect you, think of yourself as live bait.’

Beautiful picture of cute dog Indy

Indy, a small version of an American bulldog she had rescued from the Nelson SPCA, ambled over to take a serious look. She looked up at Alice wearing her permanently puzzled expression.

Wellington street scene Cardigan Way

From Surveillance - But as he rounded the final corner, he slowed. There was something wrong with the picture, something out of place. As he carried on cautiously, he saw through the window of the bus shelter . . .

Riley Chance

If you’re looking for: a genius, a thought leader, a transformational change agent or societal visionary, then you’re on the wrong site. Be careful though, as Tarantino’s character in Reservoir Dogs Nice Guy Eddie observed - ‘just because they say it, now that don't necessarily make it fucking so.’
