Understanding Marx
I have read this short, easy to read book a couple of times - Marx for Beginners by Rius (Eduardo Humberto del Río García). I hear his name used often in a myriad of contexts by people who clearly haven’t read anything about Marx.
I recommend it to all NZ politicians who think his first name is Karlo or Groucho Marx was a grumpy communist. It's written in cartoons (just saying). Marx (among others) is foundational, you can't like or dislike, agree or disagree without having a basic understanding.
The cartoon below is, for me, particularly pertinent when I think about societal change. 'Philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it.'
Academia frustrates me - great ideas, brilliant people, in-depth discussion, little impact (barring climate scientists who have been screaming for years). As the quote highlights, the purpose is change, not talk about change.
